The Mokranjac Music School was founded on September 21, 1899 in Belgrade, under the name Serbian Music School. As the oldest music and pedagogical institution in Serbia, it remains a fundamentally significant institution for the development of music education and for the history of music culture in the country. The founder of the school was the Belgrade Singing Society, while the first board members and teachers were Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac, Stanislav Binički, and Cvetko Manojlović. Throughout its long and esteemed history, the Principals of the school have always been prominent pedagogues, starting with Mokranjac, and including Petar Krstić, Predrag Milošević, Milka Đaja, Jela Kršić, and Božena Bandur, among others. The School later took the name of the famous Serbian composer, also the school’s first director, in 1946. The Spomenica [Testimony Book], published in 1974 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the school’s existence, also testifies to the prominence of the School. As a result of the dedicated work of its teachers and students, the School has received numerous social recognitions and awards, among which are the Dositej Obradović Award (1969), the Vuk’s Award, the Order of Merits for the People with the Golden Star, and the May 25 Republic Award.
