The Zagreb Quartet was founded in 1919 when they held their first concert in the Great Hall of the Croatian Music Institute. The original members of this first professional ensemble of its kind on the Croatian music scene were violinists Václav Huml and Milan Graf, violist Ladislav Miranov, and cellist Umberto Fabbri. For over ninety years, musicians such as Stjepan Šulek, Josip Klima, Zlatko Balija, Đorđe Trkulja, Marija Cobenzl, Goran Bakrač, Ante Živković, Josip Stojanović, Goran Končar, Sergej Evseev, Marin Maras and many others have contributed to the successful functioning of the ensemble. The Quartet has had more than four thousand performances across six continents and released more than 60 records for various world labels and radio companies, such as Sastruphon, RCA, Melodicom, Da Camera Magna, Croatia Records, and ALM Records, among others. They have a stylistically wide repertoire, ranging from classical and romantic pieces to contemporary composers with a particular emphasis on Croatian composers, especially pieces by Božidar Širol, Josip Štolcer Slavenski, Fran Lhotka, Antun Dobronić, Boris Papandopulo, Milo Cipra, Milko Kelemen, and others. Today’s members of the ensemble are Martin Krpan, the Hrvoje brothers, Davor Philips, and Martin Jordan. Among their numerous national and international rewards and prizes, there stands out the 2009 Vladimir Nazor Life Achievement Award.
