Cimbaliband is best known worldwide as the first Hungarian world music group to perform in Eurosonic Noorderslag in 2013. This multicultural band gives their audience an astonishing experience with virtuoso instrumental solos, humor through music, and a historical look around the Balkans. Open to different cultures, the musicians offer an unforgettable journey through time and space. This seven-piece group is the living messenger of the motto of the EU – ‘United in diversity.’ Notably, they were chosen to perform for the opening ceremony of the Spanish EU governance. In 2016, their album Moldva debuted at 8th in the Europe World Music Charts. In 2018, they were selected for, as the only Hungarian band for the Songlines compilation album Top of the World.
Szabadon is an eleven-track album based on dialects of Hungarian folk music. Through the interweaving of jazz and folk music, the performers present instrumental solos and catchy melodies. All band members have a strong personal connection to authentic Hungarian folk music. Balázs Unger’s own music and his daily connection with folk music made him realize how important improvisation is in this genre – the skills of musical improvisation play an important role in the specific individual style of the masters of Hungarian traditional music.
