The Diary of an Ugly Duckling, by combining theater and dance with a simple, evocative narrative from the classic fairy tale by H.C. Andersen, investigates diversity, identity, and integration. It is an adaptation of the fairy tale which tells the story of the diary of a small swan, believed to be a duckling, crossing the various stages of life as those told in the original story, through which she discovers herself and her place in the world, discovering diversity as a key and valuable element: being born and being rejected by family, going to school and being bullied, starting work, unexpected love that may soon disappear without a reason, the inexplicable horrors of war and hunting, a hostile world, etc. But, all that will last only until our “duckling” is able to look herself in the eye and accept herself as she is, just like the little duckling of Andersen’s fairy tale who discovers his true identity by looking at his mirror image in the lake. We should not try to hide the scars we accumulate in life; instead, they could and should be treasured.
