The Chinese, a play by Maja Todorović, touches many sensitive spots of our (post) transitional traumas, whose biggest victims are the children, the protagonists of this story. This seemingly simple tale about a new friendship between a boy and a girl and finding a grain of sense and meaningfulness in a world full of prejudice, which lacks recognition and understanding of others and those who are different, reflects a far more complex issue in contemporary society, one that is not inclined towards sensitivity and honesty – a society that, above all, resents weakness. This is a story about love, friendship, and imagination. This is a story about a wizard – the Chinese – who has the ability to see a colorful world with different eyes. This is a story about modern times, but also a reminiscence of another time, one we did not forget, nor will we ever. This is Goran’s, Jelena’s, and Emir’s story. And mine. And yours, too.
