Lijerica of the Dubrovnik Region

The tradition of playing the lijerica (lirica), once common among the people of the Dalmatian coast and Boka, still remains alive today thanks to a few admirers of this traditional instrument. The musician and maker of lijerica Đorđe Begu, from Kotor, has for many decades already been established in Dubrovnik and continues on with his rare craftsmanship of lijerica. the instrument which the International Festival of Klapa Perast chose as the name (in the local Boka dialect) for its own almanac – Lirica.

ĐORĐE BEGU, renowned string player on the lijerica, but also the maker of this traditional and rare instrument, gained his musical education at the Vida Matjan Music School in Kotor as pupil of Prof. Nikša Čučić (violin) and Prof. Anton Homen (guitar). Since 1962, Begu has been a permanent member of the Linđo Folklore Ensemble. He studied lijerica under many of the senior players in the Dubrovnik area, but learned especially from his mentor, the prominent lijerica player Stijepo Đurić, who directed him towards making his own instrument. His experience in construction has been implemented in the book Lijerica of the Dubrovnik Region – The Guide for Its Making and Maintaining for the Basis of Playing. Аs a performer, he has collaborated with Tereza Kerosija, Nardelli, Bulić, the Gracija Ensemble, and the klapa Kaše from Dubrovnik.
