The Chinese, a play by Maja Todorović, touches many sensitive spots of our (post) transitional traumas, whose biggest victims are the children, the protagonists of this story. This seemingly simple tale about a new friendship between a boy and a girl, and finding a grain of sense and meaningfulness in a world full of prejudice and a lack of recognition and understanding of others and those who are different, reflects a far more complex issue in contemporary society, one that is not inclined towards sensitivity and honesty – a society that, above all, resents weakness. This is a story about love, friendship, and imagination. This is a story about a wizard – the Chinese – who has an ability to see a colorful world with different eyes. This is a story about modern times, but also reminiscent of another time, one we have not forgotten, nor will we ever. This is Goran’s, Jelena’s, and Emir’s story. And mine. And yours, too.
